What exactly is a biofilm?
Biofilm is a complex biological structure created by microorganisms settling on the internal surfaces of water installations, technological systems, and surfaces coming into contact with water or the production environment.
This is not a single stain or loose deposit.
Biofilm creates an active protective layer that over time adheres to pipes, tanks, valves, drinking systems, processing lines, and hard-to-reach infrastructure elements.
Among other things, the following can develop in a biofilm:
- bacteria,
- mushrooms,
- yeast,
- environmental microorganisms,
- pathogens responsible for secondary contamination,
- organic and mineral deposits supporting microflora development.
The problem is that biofilm very often develops out of sight. The installation may look correct from the outside, and the incoming water may meet basic quality requirements – yet active microbiological hazards can persist within the system.
Why is biofilm so difficult to remove?
Biofilm acts as a biological protective shield. Microorganisms within its structure are far less susceptible to standard disinfectants and short-term cleaning processes.
The greatest difficulties arise from the fact that biofilm:

Where does biofilm most commonly form?
The risk of biofilm development is present practically everywhere where there is:
- Water,
- Damp,
- medium flow,
- organic deposits,
- areas that hinder the complete cleaning of the installation.
The problem most often relates to:
- drinking systems,
- plumbing,
- production lines,
- CIP systems,
- tanks,
- chillers and cooling systems,
- industrial installations,
- production areas,
- ventilation and HVAC systems.
Biofilm can develop in animal production, food processing, pharmaceuticals, logistics, and modern industrial plants.
How to effectively limit the biofilm problem?
Effective biofilm control requires a systemic approach.
It's not just about a one-off disinfection, but about a process that includes:
- risk analysis,
- identifying the source of the problem,
- Selecting the appropriate technology,
- effective biofilm elimination,
- Maintaining stable microbiological conditions of installations.
Modern sanitation and disinfection processes use technologies that allow:
- penetrate the biofilm structure,
- restrict its reconstruction,
- reach hard-to-access spaces,
- stabilise the microbiological safety of the entire system.
The most important
Pure water at the inlet does not guarantee the safety of the installation.
In many cases, the interior of the system itself becomes the source of recurring microbiological problems.
Biofilm:

Biofilm is one of the most frequently underestimated microbiological threats in water and process installations. It remains invisible, difficult to remove, and can destabilise process safety for a long time.
Standard rinsing often only removes surface contaminants, failing to address the actual source of the problem.
